This past weekend I got to enjoy some time outside in the Florida sun, using sunscreen of course because you gotta protect your skin. And it got me so pumped for summer, the warm weather, and that summer glow!
The effects of winter really got me feeling a little gloomy and cold. However, now that the weather is starting to change and summer is almost upon us, there is no better time to start your summer glow up activities!
So let’s get right into the ultimate summer glow up checklist!
10 Step Summer Glow Up Checklist
1. Find a good SPF sunscreen
Before we can really get into the ‘glow’ part of this checklist, you need to start with one very important step.
Sunscreen!
I’m sure you have a least a few days penciled in laying by the beach or pool. In addition to your flip flops, sunnies, and towel, I hope you have saved some room in your beach bag for sunscreen.
You have to protect your skin from those UV rays. Too much sun exposure can cause wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and of course, skin cancer.
Therefore, when the sun is shining, it is good practice to put sunscreen on everyday!
Invest in a good sunscreen with at least 30 SPF as recommended by many dermatologists. Apply sunscreen to your face everyday which can be put on as a base layer before your moisturizer and any makeup.
And of course, apply sunscreen anytime you have long sun exposures making sure to reapply every hour.
2. Self tan
It wouldn’t be a summer glow up without tan skin. However, if you don’t want to spends hours baking in the sun, or don’t tan easily like me, self tanner can really be your best friend when it comes to getting that bronzed, sun-kissed look.
I really like the Jergens Self tanner Mousse with a tanning glove. However, there are a ton of really good self tanners out there.
3. Whiten your teeth
Teeth whitening is a great way to give yourself that bright, shiny smile perfect for the summertime.
Studies have shown that smiling can boost your health, improve your immune system, reduce stress and may even help you live longer.
So what better time to invest in your smile then during your summer glow up?
Teeth whitening can come in a lot of different forms including:
- Whitening strips
- Using whitening tooth paste
- Use baking soda & hydrogen peroxide
- Use activated charcoal
- Use coconut oil
- Teeth whitening kits
- Professional whitening
4. Lighten your hair
Next up is another summer staple which is lightened hair. To get that sun-bleach hair, there are a ton of different ways to do so.
Some include:
- Lemon juice
- Baking soda
- Spending time in the sun
- Going to a salon and dying it
- Apple cider vinegar
- Hair lightening products
For many, the summer sun naturally lightens your hair by bleaching out the melanin, however, these are just a few ways you can speed up the process.
5. Exfoliate your skin
Exfoliating your skin can results in a much brighter, vibrant and smoother looking skin by removing your dead skin cells and revealing new, fresh ones.
Exfoliating 1-2 times a week will keep your looking fresh and young.
Get ready for summer with nothing but smooth skin.
6. Get a Manicure & Pedicure
It’s mani pedi time!
Painting your finger and toe nails a fun, bright summertime color can really get you into the summer vibe. Therefore, I had to include this on the summer glow up checklist.
Although going into a nail salon is really fun, you can also paint your nails at home for a cheaper alternative.
7. Dye your Eyelashes & Eyebrows
If you have naturally dark, voluminous eyelashes, go ahead a skip that step now.
And…for the rest of us, dying your eyelashes (and eyebrows) is game changer! The summer usually includes a good amount of time by the pool or swimming and makeup just isn’t going to do it.
However, if you still want dark, visible eyelashes and eyebrows, dyeing them will change your life. You won’t have to worry about makeup and you will still look amazing.
I don’t trust myself to dye my eyelashes at home (although may people have been very successful). However, I choose to go into a salon which cost around $15-$35 for eyelash tint only. So, it’s super cheap and affordable.
However, I do dye and wax my own eyebrows, so if you wish to do the same and save some money, check out my post ‘how to dye your eyebrows at home using Men’s beard dye‘ and ‘how to wax your eyebrows at home‘,
8. Exercise regularly
Exercising regularly helps to keep your body working properly, improves your mental health, strengthens your bones and muscles, and improves the ability to do everyday activities. Therefore, it is no secret that regular exercise is important.
You should be aiming to get at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week.
However, during summer your motivation might be a little higher considering it’s swim suit season! Exercise regularly will also help to manage weight and decrease bloating.
9. Drink water
Summertime means an increased risk of dehydration.
Making sure that you are drinking a substantial amount of water throughout the day will help to keep your skin and body bright and hydrated as well as keep your body temperature down.
If you wish to drink to more throughout the day but don’t know how, read my post ‘12 Best Ways to Drink More Water + Signs Your Dehydrated’ and find out how to make drinking water easier than ever.
10. Update your wardrobe & shop summer staples
Out with the old and in with the new!
Each season new fashion trends come in and this summer is no different. One of my favorite ways to bring in summer is by getting a few new summer staples.
It’s doesn’t have to be a major shopping spree that breaks the bank, but maybe you want a few new pieces.
Some summer staples include:
- Linen button up
- New sunglasses
- Swimsuit
- Swimsuit cover
- Tank tops
- Demin shorts
- Sun dress
And that is it! The ultimate summer glow up checklist!
