Building a healthy relationship with food is a power thing. For me, I really enjoy working out and 3 years ago it was way easier to go to the gym and complete a really good workout and feel super good after, then skip dessert every night or pick the vegetables instead of pizza. If you are thinking the same about yourself, keep reading and get some great tips on how to build a healthy relationship with food.
Over the past 3 years I started including nutrition and healthy habits into my life and that changed my body, mind set, and confidence enormously and helped me build a healthy relationship with food. I’ve realized that it takes more than just working out to be healthy. It’s true, you can’t out work an unhealthy diet.
Thus, I switched my mindset and found ways to eat the foods I liked while keeping it healthy and nutritious. It didn’t happen overnight, and I worked on it every day until it became normal for me and easy for me to eat with proper nutrition and have a healthy relationship with food. You can do the same after reading all about these helpful tips.
First step…
Realize that food is meant to nourish your body and provide you with energy to thrive and feel good throughout the day. Food is good. We need food to survive. But we need the proper food and proper consumption for each food.
Switch your mindset
In a society that links food to pleasure and social occasions, it is hard to minimize eating out and consuming food as a form of entertainment. But if we really think about it, the majority of the food we consume should be to properly fuel your body and we need to start thinking of food this way. I say “the majority of what we eat” because we are human. We go out to dinner and treat ourselves on special occasions which is good and realistic, but then we have to be able to focus back in on healthy eating because that is what make us feel strong and energetic.
Think of it this way, in the morning, sure, cereal tastes good but eggs, yogurt or oatmeal tastes even better and fills us up way longer because it has the protein and nutrients our body needs. It seems like a pretty easy choice as to what breakfast is the better breakfast.
Learn Moderation
When I first tried to eat healthy, I thought it would a great idea to start the keto diet.
If you are unfamiliar with the keto diet, it is basically a diet that restricts all carbohydrates and all refined sugars. I want to say that this is NOT a maintainable diet. Completely excluding entire food groups will not work and can create unhealthy habits like binging.
It was super hard and unsustainable but throughout those months, I learned a ton of ways to substitute healthy alternates in place of the sugar and carbohydrates and found that most of those alternates actually tasted better than the fattening food as well. I also learned that its okay to eat your guilty pleasures, but moderation is the key.
Needless to say, I really enjoyed the time I was on the diet, and it is a really good diet to drop weight fast however, when it comes to a lifestyle and maintaining weight, going keto is not it.
Instead, limit your carbohydrates and refined sugars and eat them in moderation. For example, for breakfast, instead of having pancakes with hash browns on the side, go for some eggs with a piece of toast or one pancake. Even better, you can substitute almond flour in when you make your pancake mix which is healthier than regular flour and still tastes delicious.
With that said, having a serving of rice with dinner or pizza every now a then isn’t bad as long as we don’t have 3 servings of rice and 4 pieces of pizza. We want to combine those foods with protein or vegetables to fill us up.
Healthy food tastes good
Knowing that we can make healthy food taste really good is what having a healthy relationship with food is all about. We don’t have to have triple chocolate brownies or French fries for our meal to taste good and it doesn’t have to be junk food for our bodies to crave it. One of my favorite snacks is Canadian bacon circles heated up in a pan topped with melted cheese and avocado. I love this snack and crave this much more than fast food. So, think of a bunch of different, healthy foods that you really enjoy and start eating those. If you hate broccoli, don’t eat broccoli. Find a different vegetable that you enjoy eating instead.
If you hate what you are eating, you aren’t going to want to eat it. It’s as simple as that. Find the healthy foods that you like, and you will gain a much better relationship with food.

You will feel better eating healthy
The thing that really made me continue and strive to eat healthy is the fact that I have so much more energy during the day, motivate to do things, and willingness to continue to eat healthy. What’s nice about this is that you can feel the results of eating healthy after the first or second day. You aren’t going to see the results after one day of eating healthy, but you will feel the results.
If you start the day with a donut and a bowl of cereal, you are likely to eat like that for the rest of the day. Breakfast is a really important meal because it sets the tone for the rest of the day.
You will feel so much happy and confident when you eat healthy, and you will be glowing.
Conclusion
Remember that food is fuel for your body and gives you energy and strength. Therefore, if you are hungry, you should be eating. You don’t have to eliminate your favorite foods because that will cause binge eating. Instead, eat those less nutrition foods in moderation and find healthy foods that you really like and enjoy eating. That way you can see that healthy food tastes good and it is not something that should be dreaded. Finally, realize that these healthy foods will make you feel like you’re on top of the world and energized all day. You will be excited for your next nutritious and healthy meal.
By keeping these things in mind, you will have a much healthy and appreciative relationship with food and staying healthy.
