The Impact
The impact your eyebrows have on your appearance is crazy to think about but that’s why it is so important to focus on your eyebrows before anything else.
The other day one of my friends saw the picture on my driver’s license. She immediately said she didn’t even recognize me. Keep in mind that picture that around 5 years old and I have obviously changed so much. But the next thing she said is that the biggest difference in the picture was that I had no eyebrows! And it’s true, my eyebrows were so light, it looked like I didn’t have any at all.
If you a redhead like, you know exactly what I’m talking about and I feel your pain and struggle.
I did what any young teenager would do and started filling my eyebrows in each day with a pencil. This was least a step up from my blonde brows. However, being a swimmer, I was constantly in and out of the pool and makeup just washed right out and I was back to square one. It was not effective and such a hassle.
I needed something more permanent without having to pay so much to get them tinted.
And that’s when I learned how to dye my eyebrows at home.
After learning how to dye my eyebrows at home, my eyebrows reached medium brown without the use of any makeup. I’m not spending a bunch of money getting them dying professionally, saving time and my eyebrows are visible and thriving.
Moral of the story, your eyebrows have so much impact on your appearance. The way you style your eyebrows and their color can make or break your look. Not to mention how much the beauty industry has put an emphasis on eyebrows.
Although everyone has different opinions and taste, it is typically known that your eyebrows should be 1 to 2 shades darker than your hair color.
Below is a before and after picture of when I dye more eyebrows so you can see just how much of a difference it can be. The two pictures were taken 10 minutes apart.
What you Need:

- Cotton balls
- Angled Makeup Brush
How to pick the right color:
Good news!
Picking the right color for you easier than you think!
There are a few key elements to keep in mind when you are picking out a color.
- Generally, your eyebrows should be 1-2 shades darker than your hair color.
- What is your preference? Do you typically like your eyebrows more or less dark? For example, the model and actress, Cara Delevingne, is known for having super dark eyebrows compared to her blonde hair. Personally for me, I really like darker brows as well. However some people prefer to have more natural looking eyebrows and will aim for an eyebrow color similar to their hair. It is up to you to know your preference and plan accordingly for the best results.
- If you are having trouble deciding between 2 colors, go for the lighter one if you want a more natural looking brow.
While you are deciding the right color for you, remember that each person is different. My natural eyebrows are bleach blonde and get the color medium brown. This is obviously more than 2 shades darker than my hair but it works for me but may not work for you. Pick a color based on what you think it best for you.

Let’s get into it!
Step 1:
The first thing you are going to do is prep your eyebrows and skin.
Before you go in with dye, you are going to want to trim, wax or pluck your eyebrows. Having a well-groomed brow will make the application process easier and give you a cleaner line.
I wax my own eyebrows. It is super easy to do yourself and you will get amazing results without spending a ton of money and time. Click here to for my full tutorial on how I wax my own eyebrows.
Step 2:
Put a pea size amount of each the developer and color on a mini tray. It should be a one-to-one ratio of developer to color. Take an angled brush and mix it together.
Step 3:
Apply the mixture to your eyebrows. Make sure to thoroughly saturate the hairs. During the first few times, I recommend going a little bit slower and taking your time.
After applying a good amount to one brow, take a different small brush or Q-tip and wipe away any excess dye on the skin around your eyebrow. The dye will show up on your skin so it important the dye is only in the places you want colored.
Step 4:
Apply to both sides and wait 3-5 minutes. These colors are adjustable. Meaning, the longer you leave it on, the darker it will get. To avoid overdyeing, continue checking level of darkness as you wait.
Tip:
> If you are nervous about over-dying your eyebrows, go for less time the first few times you dye your eyebrows. Then, as you get a feel of how it will turn out, you can adjust accordingly.
Step 5:
After the recommended time, take a cotton ball or pad with a little bit of baby shampoo and wipe away the dye. Then, use water and wash the remaining dye off.
When you first dye your eyebrows, the first day or two will be darker than normal because the color has dyed the skin under your hair as well. This will quickly fade and only hair will remain dark.
What to Expect:
For those of you that have really light-colored eyebrows like me, this will work wonders for you, and you will see a drastic difference.
For those of you with darker eyebrow, it will help deep the color and will help fill your eyebrows in.
Each application should last for about 3-4 weeks.
I am a swimmer, so I am a chlorinated pool 6 days a week which causes the dye to fade faster. I usually have to re-dye my eyebrows every 2-3 weeks.
When you dye your eyebrows at home, you can expect to save a ton of money and time and will still get flawless results.
As the dye starts to fade, I like to retouch my eyebrow and lightly fill them in with either an eyebrow pencil or brown eyeshadow on days I want a little extra darkness.
This is literally my favorite beauty hack ever and I hope you enjoy as much as I do!
