And that’s the beauty of life.
You are allow to take a break from the gym or eat at little too much sometimes. It’s all about balance not perfection.

10 Steps for a Complete Detox Week
This detox week focuses on three main areas of wellness:
- Exercise
- Diet
- Selfcare
I have noticed that when you cover all three of these areas, your overall health skyrockets physically and mentally.
As you go through these steps, you will notice that every single one can fit into these categories and all of them have such a powerful effect on the body and mind.
After this detox week, the goal is to feel energized, pampered, and healthy but it is also a great way to get back into the routine of regularly going to the gym and putting yourself first.
So with that said, let’s get into it!
1. Hit the gym
Going to the gym and sweating it out is one of the best ways to kick off your detox week. Getting your body moving again after possibly not engaging in physical activity in a while is going to feel super good and clarifying.
Trust me, your body and mind will thank you for it. Our bodies are not meant to spend extended periods of time without physical activity and after a while, it can negatively affect you in multiple areas without you even realizing.
Try to go to the gym at least 3 times during the week. If you haven’t worked-out recently, take it easy on your first day and gradually work yourself back up. And if you are doing a detox weekend, find at least one time over the weekend to get a workout in.
2. Stretch
This may seem like a waste of time, but this is going to keep your body feeling young, and I know we all want to look and feel as young as possible, especially as those numbers start to climb. I’m in my 20s and already taking precautions to avoid the inevitable aging process. Stretching is one of them!
Stretch, stretch, stretch!
Even if it is only for 5 minutes every few days. Your joints and muscles will thank you for it. As you start to workout again, your muscles will likely feel tight and a good stretching session is the perfect addition to your detox week.

You can even use a foam roller and roll out your muscles and release any tension and stress you may have. Try these 8 Foam rolling moves.
Note: If you do get a foam roller, make sure to get a round foam roller and not one with spikes meant for deep tissue. I find that the deep tissue really hurts, especially if you roller on your back.
Yoga and Pilates are also great ways to get in some stretching and move your body. You can try this 15-Minute Morning Sun Salutation yoga stretch.
3. Drink water
You can’t have a detox week without getting enough water every day. Drinking water is a must when it comes to detoxifying your body and flushing all the toxins out.
In fact, drinking water is one of the fastest ways to flush those toxins out of your body as water can be digested in as little as 5 minutes. Talk about instant detoxification!
Other health benefits include:
- Skin clarity and health
- Weight control
- Blood pressure and body temperature regulation
- Energy boosting
- Joint health
- Increased oxygen to the brain
So how much water should you drink per day?
Many health experts say that you should drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. However, the amount of water you need depends on a lot of factors such as weight, physical activity level, and environmental conditions.
Additionally, the general recommendation from The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine says:
- 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) a day for women
- 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) a day for men
If you want more of a challenge during your detox week, I like to aim for 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight. (For example, a 150 pound person should drink 150 ounces of water each day)

4. Eat balanced, home-cooked meals
Aren’t home-cooked meals just the best after you have been away for a while? A lot of times I can’t wait to make my first meal after a vacation or busy holiday season.
During this detox week, try to avoid dining out a bunch of times and instead cook balanced meals at home. Eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, protein, and carbohydrates helps improve your gut health and provides you with all the nutrients and energy you need to stay strong and healthy each day.
Contrary, when dining out, you are more tempted to splurge on an entrée or order dessert as well. The portion sizes tend to be exceptionally large and simple dinners end up being over 1,000 calories.
Making balanced meals at home doesn’t have to be complicated and in fact, it is actually fairly simple. If you want to learn how to easily make balanced meals, check out my post on How To Build An Easy & Delicious Balanced Meal for Dinner.
5. Avoid refined sugars and fried foods
Chances are when you are on vacations or holidays, lots of sweets and dessert may be involved. And as it should! However, dessert every night and eating out all the time isn’t healthy in the long run.
On a detox week, you want to get your body back on track to a more balanced diet. Your body most likely needs a few days to cleanse your body of refined sugary foods. It may hard because your body is use to those foods, however, after a day or two, it’ll be easier and you won’t crave them all the time.
*Disclaimer: I am not telling you to completely cut out sugary foods forever. Simple avoiding these foods for a day or two will help clean out your gut and let your body and mind realize you don’t need them all the time.
6. Sit in a sauna
One of the most common, and widely known health benefits of a sauna is it’s detoxification properties. The hot temperatures cause your body to sweat which releases toxins such as heavy metals, chemicals and radioactive particles through your skin.
Saunas also have a bunch of other health benefits which include:
- Recovery of sore muscles
- Increased metabolism & weight loss
- Skin health & antiaging benefits
- Improved sleep
- Reduced stress
- Relaxation
If you want to go all out during your detox week and healthy reset, find some time to visit your nearest sauna and give it a try!

7. Clean your space
Having a clean environment has been specifically proven to benefit your health.
Danielle Roeske, Psy.Ds, vice president of residential services at Newport Healthcare says “Our outer worlds invariably affect our inner worlds and vice versa,”
Having a clean space gives your mind a sense of clarity and control, improves your focus, boost your mood and improves your overall wellness and mental health. The physical act of cleaning and decluttering also releases endorphins, which Dr. Roeske states,“is hugely beneficial as a pain reliever, stress reliever and overall enhancement of our well-being.”
Therefore, cleaning your home and space is an important step to detoxify your mind.
In most cases, doing a quick 10-minute cleaning sessions may be all you need. However, when you undergoing a detox week, this is the perfect time to go all out with your cleaning. This can include:
- Doing Laundry
- Deep cleaning
- Organizing your closet/pantry
- Dusting
- Vacuuming
- Wiping ceiling fans and light fixtures
- Cleaning baseboards and window/door frames
8. Set your weekly intentions/plan
This step is so important! If you only do one of these steps, let it be this one.
Setting your weekly intentions and creating a plan for the week is the best way to get your life organized so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Your life will feel like it is getting back on track by giving the coming week a purpose and direction.
You can do this by:
- Creating your goals for the week
- Making a list of everything you need to do (Include work, meetings, appointments, gym sessions, grocery store trips, etc.)
- Use a planner or calendar to map out each day.
Once you have your weekly intentions and plan, you can go into each day of the week knowing exactly what you need to get done and it will result in more productivity and the feeling of accomplishment.
This is a great strategy to do not only for your detox week, but for every week. Take 10 minutes over the weekend to map out the following week.

9. Groom yourself
This step definitely fits into the self-care category. When you are starting your week, I have found that when you take some time to groom yourself and get yourself ready for the week, you have more motivation and feel better about yourself.
These things could include:
- Exfoliating
- Shaving your legs (Learn why you should exfoliate before shaving)
- Self-tanning (Bondi Sands 1 hour express self tanner is the BEST. It has a greenish undertone so it doesn’t look so orange and only takes 1 hour to develop.)
- Getting a haircut
- Showering
This means anything you do to yourself that makes you feel put together and clean.
10. Practice self-care
Self-care looks different for everyone. For me self-care is all about bath bombs, face masks, and candles. However, taking time to do the things that brings YOU joy and makes YOU feel good is an important step in taking care of your well-being.
Some of your favorite go-to selfcare activities may already be on this list.
However, if it is not, go ahead and add them into your week. Taking time to do things that make you happy will ultimately result in a much enjoyable life.
And that’s it! I hope you have a wonderful and detoxifying week. Let me know in the comments what your favorite detox step is. I’d love to hear!
